Why I Became a Local Web Designer for Small Businesses in Northwest Georgia | WebSGA

About WebSGA

I didn’t set out to become a web designer. I set out to solve a problem — and somewhere along the way I realized that helping local small businesses build a real online presence was the most rewarding work I’d ever done. That’s still true today.

My name is James Phillips. I’m the designer, developer, and host behind WebSGA, and I want to tell you exactly how I got here.

It Started With a Corporate Website Nobody Else Wanted to Build

I spent over 15 years working in IT for the Atlanta division of a major food service distributor. I handled a wide range of technical responsibilities, but one project changed everything: I was tasked with building the division’s very first website.

This wasn’t a small job. It was a major corporate rollout — and it was a success. More importantly, it was the first time I remember walking away from a project thinking, I want to do more of this.

The work connected the technical side of my brain with something tangible. A website is something people actually use. It represents a real business. It matters.

Local Businesses Started Asking for Help — and I Listened

Word got around. Local businesses started reaching out asking if I could build websites for them. I took on a few projects on the side, and the response was clear: these businesses needed real help, and most of them weren’t getting it.

The big agencies were out of reach — too expensive, too slow, and frankly, not that interested in a small landscaping company or a family-owned HVAC shop in Northwest Georgia. The DIY builders like Wix and Squarespace looked easy but almost never delivered the results small businesses actually needed.

There was a real gap. And I realized I was in a position to fill it.

Why Local Small Businesses — Not Big Corporations

I could have gone the corporate route. After 15 years of IT experience, I had the résumé for it.

But building a website for a local plumber, a neighborhood restaurant, or a small contractor — and watching it actually help them win more customers — hits differently than a project that disappears into a corporate system somewhere.

These businesses are competing against larger companies with bigger marketing budgets every single day. A well-built, properly optimized website levels that playing field. That’s something I find genuinely rewarding, and it’s something I haven’t lost enthusiasm for in over 12 years of doing this on my own.

What I Handle — So You Don’t Have To

One of the frustrations small business owners tell me about is having to manage five different vendors just to keep a website running. A designer here, a hosting company there, an SEO consultant somewhere else. Nobody talks to each other. Nothing gets done efficiently.

I handle everything under one roof:

  • Website Design — Custom WordPress sites built around your business, not a recycled template.
  • Website Hosting — Fast, Atlanta-based hosting so your site loads quickly for local customers.
  • Search Engine Optimization (SEO) — Built-in from day one, not bolted on as an afterthought.
  • Email Setup — Professional business email that matches your domain.
  • Logo Design — A clean, professional brand identity if you need one.

You deal with me directly — no account managers, no ticket queues, no runaround. When you have a question or need something updated, you call or email me.

12+ Years In — and I Still Approach Every Project the Same Way

I’ve been designing websites independently for over 12 years now. The tools have changed. The platforms have evolved. Search engines have gotten smarter.

But the thing that drives me hasn’t changed at all: every new project is a chance to help a local business compete and succeed online. I look at every website I build the same way I looked at that first corporate project years ago — as a problem worth solving well.

If you’re a small business in the Dallas, Hiram, Powder Springs, Marietta, or greater Atlanta area and you’re ready for a website that actually works for your business, I’d like to talk.
